FRIDAY: BREEZY AFTERNOON YIELDS VERY BRISK ACTION AT CLASSIC XVI
Friday afternoon crowned three new bonus race champions at
the NAPA Auto Parts Halloween Classic XVI.
Kenny Anderson was very impressive throughout the 128-car Super Roller
eliminator. Pocketing the $2,000 top prize, Anderson ran .025, and nailed a 7.92
(7.87 dial) to stop Brian Stief from Billings, Mont. Stief hit a .011, but the
car stumbled just a touch off the starting line, running .011, 7.61 (7.37 dial)
to claim runner-up.
We also tip our hat to both Steve Pyburn and Phil Hudlow for collecting bonus
race victories, both No Box Hi Roller and No Box Gambler (respectively) right at
sundown.
One of the day’s most amazing runs belonged to the turbo-Ford of Ken Tupper in
the final round of Top Gun qualifying. Saving his best for last, Tupper ripped
off a 6.82 at 210 miles per hour to lead all qualifiers in both full and open
wheel action. Paul Snell narrowly held onto the Open Wheel qualifying sheet with
his earlier 6.89. Reg DeForest cranked up a career best 6.91 to grab the second
spot with his supercharged `23 T Roadster from Edmonton.
Saturday will see the official start of the Classic fun `n games as the Fright
Night returns to Firebird. If you had other plans, drop `em, `cause this year’s
Classic is shaping up to be an absolute dandy.
