SATURDAY: COOL, CRISP AND VERY FAST DAY OF RACING AT CLASSIC XVI
Even though the weather was on the cool side, it was a very
busy and hot day of non-stop action at the NAPA Auto Parts Halloween Classic
XVI.
By virtue of a northern low pressure system that rolled its way into western
Idaho, a decision was reached to run several rounds of eliminations on Saturday
afternoon and evening. Racing took place in Super Pro, Pro, Heavy and Sportsman,
along with a multitude of Junior eliminators.
The Top Gun Shootout was contested throughout the afternoon. Impressively, Dan
Lafferty drove his Dragster to a perfect .000 reaction and ran 7.26 on a 7.23
dial to sweep the runoff. Jake Neibauer earned runner-up with a .008 light and a
7.60 (7.56 dial) in a race decided by .010 (margin of victory).
In the Open Wheel final, Lafferty edged out Ken Nelson with a .019, 7.23 on a
7.22 dial at 182.44 mph. And in the Full Bodied final, Neibauer won for the
second straight year in an all Montana final. Driving his red `63 Corvette,
Neibauer scored the win with a 7.57 on a 7.56 dial.
Racing continues on Sunday with gates opening at 9 am and eliminations to
continue shortly thereafter.
