PEPSI NIGHTFIRE NATIONALS: FRIDAY

The second day of the 41st Annual Pepsi Nightfire Nationals featured the opening round of qualifying in the professional ranks, as well as the second full day of racing in the sportsman categories.

Texan John Hale led the way in AA/Funny Car, piloting his '69 Camaro to a blistering 5.97-second run at 234 mph. Second-generation funny car racer Will Martin posted a 6.03 to qualify second. His booming 244 mph speed was the best of the night. World champ Jason Rupert shut off early and still ended the night as the number 3 qualifier at 6.04.

In AA/Fuel Dragster it was Stockton, California resident Rick Williamson leading the way. His 5.88-second, 254 mph pass was the best of the night, out-distancing Adam Sorokin and points-leader Jim Young, among others.

Dan Myers drove his ultra-cool '57 Cameo pickup to the top spot in Pro Modified. The Ramona, California racer ran 6.40, 234 mph.

The all-conquering Mark Kidd won his second title in two nights, as he followed up his Thursday Pro win with a championship run in Bracketeer. The Twin Falls resident knocked out Tom Clark in a double-breakout final round affair to pocket a cool $5,000, running his weekend total to $7,000.

In Pro, two Idaho racers advanced to the title frame, with Houston Head driving his '73 Duster to the win over Craig Schell and his '67 Cougar.

Racing resumes on Saturday with more Bracketeer action along with Professional qualifying at 2 and 7 pm.
