RUPERT WINS FIREBIRD IGNITOR TITLE IN TRACK RECORD FASHION
Jason Rupert from Yorba Linda, Calif., won the Funny
Car title for the second straight year at the 42nd Annual NAPA Auto
Parts Ignitor Opener at Firebird. In the semi-final round, Rupert
unleashed the quickest and fastest performance in track history at 5.76
elapsed time and a speed of 251.60 miles per hour. The reigning NHRA
World Champion followed up with a convincing victory, recording a 5.78
at 251.60 mph to defeat John Hale from Dallas.
Locally, two Idaho racers collected NHRA Division 6 titles. Gordon Boven,
Boise, won the Super Street category, while Mark Kidd from Twin Falls
captured the Pro eliminator title with his `55 Chevy.
