Although this is a current photo, you could
certainly say that Steve Woods personifies a true "Blast from the
Past". Having first raced at Firebird in the early 70's, Woods has long
been considered one of the track's all-time most succesful Gasser racers. He
was a winner in the 70's and has continued that success in the modern era,
too, earning his fourth consecutive Oldies But Goodies title in as many tries.
Driving his new `63 Corvette, he recorded runs of 6.91, 6.90, 6.95 and 7.06 to
topple Dale Boomgaarden in the Mallicoat Bros. Cuda in the final of the AA/Superchargered
Big Sky Championships presented by Spangler Bros. Auto Body. Boomgaarden was
on his way to pulling off the upset in the final (too), charging out of the
gate to a .041 to .236 advantage. He had a 1.08 60' number compared to Woods
1.10, but the car wouldn't shift for him as he was approaching the eighth-mile
mark. Hats off to Woods, Chuck Moore & company for their big win on the
first weekend of June. Image by Nitrophoto
