Larry Hale

Although this is a new photo from the Stinker Season Opener, the driver of the Studebaker in the near lane is a true "Blast from the Past". At 74 years of age, Larry Hale is one of the senior members of the Firebird racing scene. Once an employee of a southern California magneto company, today he is retired and resides in the city of Buhl down in the heart (Magic Valley) of southern Idaho. One of the finest no box racers to ever compete at Firebird, Hale continues running the Gold Cup point's chase. Racing his Cadillac-powered 1960 Studebaker, he was able to fend off good friend Jeffrey Langan in the No Box Gambler final round during the Opener on April 18th. Having raced in the sport for better than five decades, Hale is one of the very interesting racers to visit with in our sport. His stories of the days at Lions, San Gabriel, Riverside, Ontario, Irwindale and countless other SoCal tracks (especially all those that are no longer with us) is truly priceless. Congratulations to Larry on his Second Chance victory this past weekend. Image by Firebird staff
