Firebird’s original Christmas tree was one giant piece of equipment (and very heavy, too). When the track first opened in 1968, a decision was reached with Larry Applegate to install the state-of-the art (for the era) Newtronics timing system. One unique difference at the time between the Newtronics and the more common Chondeck set-up was a four versus five amber tree. In addition, the original tree had staging lights (only) and no pre-stage lights. It would still be quite a number of years before the “now standard” three-amber tree would become status quo, along with the addition of pre-stage lights.
