Here’s another interesting pit scene photo from the first year Firebird was in operation. Taken in the Fall of 1968, this is the Gaines Markley injected-Super eliminator dragster based out of Federal Way, Washington. This is same person who eventually went onto to have drivers like Gary Beck, Rob Bruins and others compete in Top Fuel cars for him. Gaines passed away in 2008, but will always be remembered for quite a variety of front-engined and rear-engined Dragsters that won more than their fair share of events back in the day. He along with driver Rob Bruins earned the NHRA Top Fuel national championship in 1979 (which included an Idaho Top Fuel victory at Firebird’s NHRA World Championship Series meet earlier that season).
