Scott Casper was kind enough to share this grandstand photo (taken by his dad Bob) from the 1981 Ignitor Nationals. Featuring a huge 16-car field of AA/Funny Cars, it was the only stop on the twelve-race AHRA national tour that showcased an all-Funny Car race (with 21 cars trying to qualify for eliminations on Sunday). Literally the who’s who was at Firebird for this major event including Don “the Snake Prudhomme, far lane, and Twig Zeigler. This shot is from the opening round of eliminations. Zeigler went into a huge wheelstand (better than 100’ in length) and eventually had to throw the towel in. The eventual winner of the event was “240 Gordie” Bonin over Henry Harrison.
