In 1974, Firebird announced that it would host an AHRA Grand American event. It was a one-year alliance that brought the national series to Idaho’s capital city (Sept. 27-29, 1974). The event featured quite a number of superstars (in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and a variety of other classes), including the likes of Don Prudhomme, Ed McCulloch, Jerry Ruth, Tom McEwen and many others. Individual winners included “the Snake” in his Army Funny Car, running 6.82-210.29 mph, and Gary Beck in Top Fuel, who scored the title with a run of 6.30-242.48 mph. In this classic photo from the event, these two old timer Fords make a parade lap with a flag start by Tad Pollack who worked at a number of early Firebird events.
