Peter Berkuta (left) from southern California
was the inaugural honoree for Bracketeer Allstar during the Nightfire.
Presented by young track starter Brad New, Berkuta was acknowledged for
competing at every Bracketeer race dating back to its inception in 1976 (and
continued his consecutive streak until 2003). The tall and lanky Mopar
competitor was in the first final over Memorial Weekend in `76 (in a split
decision with Ken Heard when wet weather hit the track) and was a
champion (1991) one other year. In addition, Peter represented and won the
Division 6 E.T. Finals in Portland and went onto finish a semi-finalist at
Ontario Motor Speedway during the 1978 World Finals during the one year they
staged and offered (until the modern era) a true World Championship for a
bracket racer. Photo by the late Sam Callaway
