This is without question one of the true "Classic" photos featuring a look back at Firebird in the inaugural year of operation in August of 1968. The pre-race ads billed this event as the first appearance of Funny Cars in Idaho with none other than Dale Pulde (near side) at the wheel of the Charlie Wilson Vicious Too Camaro against the Charger of Al Karnes. As the original a-board sign reflects, the track was first recognized as Firebird International Raceway, before Int'l was dropped in the early 70's. Pulde went onto to become both a national and world champion in Funny Car racing, in addition to scoring a Nightfire crown along the way, too.
