Competing at the 1978 Nightfire 500, this is Steve McGee (near side) against Bob Gilbertson in alcohol Funny Car warfare. Funny Cars were the stars of the early Nightfire races, from nitro to rocket powered, blown alcohol to nitro injected, these one night super shows attracted literally the "who's who" in the sport from the world of flopper land. Firebird annually featured 16 fiberglass fantasics, while closer to 32 flip-topped missles were showcased at Portland Int'l and a whopping 64 of the ground pounders at S.I.R. in Kent. Without question, it was a sight you had to see to believe (as famed promoter Bill Doner might have coined in radio spots heard round the valley). Photo by Rich Carlson.
