SUNDAY HIGHLIGHTS: TWO CHAMPIONS CROWNED
Everyone had high hopes for a fast-paced finish to the 39th NAPA
Auto Parts Ignitor on the fourth and anticipated final day of
the Division 6 Lucas Oil Drag Race Series. Qualifying was swift
and intense. And eliminations started a day earlier than
planned, with high hopes of finishing on Sunday. Unfortunately,
the weather gods had different expectations as unseasonably wet
weather overwhelmed racing activities on both Saturday and
Sunday. After a reasonably good weather forecast early in the
week, everything changed late in the day on the Friday.
Amazingly enough, Saturday changed to an 80 % chance of
rainfall, and Sunday was announced for 90%. Not the best odds,
especially when you have nearly 350 racers to runoff in a
multitude of categories.
By day’s end Sunday, two titles were earned. Congratulations to
both Mike McLennan and Mike Fuller for winning the AA/Fuel
Dragster division. Thanks to the three Top Fuel teams (including
both Jim Murphy and Jack & Brett Harris) that made the tow to
Boise
regardless of weather, economic climate or even a conflicting
race date some chose to support. In our book, all three of these
teams are first class and one of the reasons we’ve long
supported the Top Fuel class at our Season Opener.
We tip our hats to
Jeff Lane
for earning the second title of the day. Driving the Hancock &
Lane Cobalt, Lane scored the Competition eliminator Wally trophy
over Division 5 heavy hitter Clint Neff from
Colorado. In a heck of a race, Lane
edged out the very swift 4-cylinder roadster based out of
Canada.
The balance of final rounds in a variety of classes will take
place on Monday after wet weather reappeared on Sunday night.
Eliminations are scheduled to go off starting at 9 am.
