30TH ANNIVERSARY SNAP ON OLDIES BUT GOODIES DRAGS PRESENTED BY PROJECT FILTER
This year’s Oldies Drags featured a wide variety of stormy
weather. First, we all learned during Friday’s parking day that
a funnel cloud (similar to a tornado) touched down about 25
minutes from the raceway. Throughout the day and night, nearly
an inch of rainfall pounded the region. After three hours of
track drying on Saturday morning conditions improved greatly, as
partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 70’s made for a
comfortable day of racin’ and showin’. A second night of
overnight rain helped create the second straight day of track
drying, but fortunately enough conditions we’re good to go by 11
am, and racing kicked into gear very rapidly. Heavy dark clouds
dominated the day, along with a number of delays due to showers,
but by 4 pm all final rounds had been completed and fourteen
champions celebrated in the Pepsi Winner’s Circle.
Thanks to Snap On Tools and Project Filter the Oldies But
Goodies Drags celebrated 30 years in 2010. We tip our hats to
the AA/Supercharged organization for putting on a fun and
entertaining show to watch. Mike Molea defeated Howard Anderson
(who had run low e.t./top speed of the meet in round one at
6.96-202 mph) in a tightly-contested final round, 7.00 to a
7.02, in a race decided by just .02 of a second.
We’d also like to recognize some of the sportsman racers who
excelled over the weekend. Notably, Lynde Fischer won her third
consecutive race in a row. She swept the Hot Truck/Gold Cup,
Super Ford/Gold Cup and now the Oldies Drags (is there more in
store?)—nice job. Scott Stanger drove his wild “Bad Manners”
Fiat Topolino to two runs into the 7.80’s, an incredible feat
due to its short wheelbase and impressive blower combination,
most certainly a sight to behold everytime he wheels it down the
quarter-mile. Also, congratulations to Bruce Compton for pulling
the monkey off his back, after twice finishing bridesmaid in
recent weeks, he scored the Pro Cash-No Box title on Sunday to
put his Oldsmobile in victory lane. And how about John Wood and
his street driven `38 Chevy coupe, the team leader of the Melba
Outlaws. Having raced at nearly 25 straight Oldies events, Wood
scored the Hot Rod title, a winner many times over the years.
Special thanks to Rick Hale with the resurrected Baron’s car
club, who helped promote the event throughout the community. He
was also one of several show winners on Saturday with his
freshly painted highboy Model A coupe. Lastly we’d like to pass
along our appreciation to the Eagle 96.9FM. They kicked things
into overdrive for the ten days leading up to the event and you
couldn’t go anywhere without hearing about the Oldies weekend
throughout the Treasure Valley.
We hope you enjoy a quick glimpse of the color and excitement
taken at this year’s Oldies bash.
We’d like to say thanks to Brian Losness, Rick Cate, Gary/Jessica Himes and staff photographers
for giving us an opportunity to showcase some of the cars
attending this year’s event. Should you wish to order any of
these outstanding shots, be sure and drop us an email and we’ll
be glad to put you in touch (via email) with the credited
photographer.
