FIREBIRD RACERS IN SPOTLIGHT AT NORTHWEST DIVISION AWARDS BANQUET
The NHRA Division 6 Banquet was a grand affair as Firebird Raceway and Idaho
racers alike were well represented in the ballroom of the Doubletree Hotel
just south of Seattle, WA.
NHRA Division 6 titles were awarded to both Mike Coltrin in Super Gas and
Gordon Boven in Super Street. For Coltrin, it was his second Super Gas title
and third Division 6 crown after winning Super Pro at the Summit E.T. Finals
several years ago.
The Land of the Leaders challenge series was swept by current Firebird
Snow/Bike track champion Jacob Wood. Both Jacob and his dad David attended
the Seattle award’s program. Wood accumulated 255 total points in the
four-race series, outdistancing Jim Funderberg (Bremerton-235 points) and
Eric Johns (Woodburn-213 pts.). In Super Pro, Jason Thomas finished tied for
sixth overall (128 pts.) behind overall victor Jeremy McGee (Champion-234
points), Andy Closkey (Eagle-213 pts.), Dave Regnier (Madras-213 pts.), Bill
Cawsey (Sask.-192 pts.), and Steve Hannawacker (Bremerton-160 pts.) In Pro,
Larry Lamberson was the top finisher with 128 points, while Brian Hebert
(Sask.-213 pts.) claimed first. In Sportsman, Firebird’s top point’s
recipient was Scott Downard at 149 pts., compared to the winner—Eric
Barker (Champion-213 pts.). The four top point finishers overall took home
an NHRA Wally award and embroidered jacket.
In addition, Firebird was selected for the “National Dragster Award” for
a record fourteenth time.
